#52 Ancestor Challenge 2019, Week 37, Marital Mistakes?

#52 Ancestor Challenge 2019, Week 37, Mistakes?

Mistakes??
The Rev. Dr. Cynthia Forde

Rebecca Jarrett McDonald did not have marital success.  Did she make mistakes?  A fifteen-year-old child bride, she married a man thirty-five years older;  eleven short years later he was dead and she was a widowed mother of four.  What was a widow with four children under ten to do but remarry a man old enough to support her?  Sadly, she married a recent widower who lost eight of his twelve children to Yellow Fever only a year earlier.  That second marriage produced my grandfather, but it quickly ended in divorce. Her third marriage brought yet another heartbreaking relationship; she took on the life role of caregiver to a husband with Alzheimer’s Disease.  What else could she do?

Rebecca was born on 24 August 1858, in Montgomery County, Alabama, the second of four children born to Martha Brooks and Elijah McDonald. Her oldest brother died at age two while Elijah was fighting for the Confederate Army in the War Between the States. After the War, when Rebecca was thirteen years old, the family headed west to Texas because Martha’s health was failing. They traveled west by horse and buggy. The family legend tells the tale of riding a raft up the Arkansas River to Fort Smith, Arkansas where  Martha Brooks passed away. Her burial is in the old section of Liberty Cemetery in Sebastian County, Arkansas. The McDonald family was taken in by William Tillman Johnston, and his sister, Martha Elizabeth Johnston.

Two years later, 11 January 1784, Rebecca McDonald, age 15 years and four months, married Will Johnston, almost 52 years old.  Will and Becky had four children: two boys and two girls. Will died in 1785, leaving Becky a widow with a growing family,

What was Becky thinking of a year and nine months later? She married William Anderson Miller, a 44-year-old a widower of two years with 4 surviving children out of 12.  Two years later, in 1888, Bill and Becky had a daughter Fannie Retha, and in 1892, a son Coy Clifton Miller.  They lived in Sebastian County, Arkansas on a small farm with a whole passel of children. In 1886, the Johnston Children’s ages: Doscia was 11, Jennie was 10, Frank was 9, and James was 8.

Is it any wonder Becky and Bill filed for divorce in 1897?

#52 Ancestor Challenge 2019, Week 36, Cynthia School Days

#52 Ancestor Challenge 2019, Week 36, Cynthia - School Days

 The Cynthia Chronicles
(Life as a Perpetual Student?)

 The Rev. Dr. Cynthia Forde

I am sitting in a cabin in Vermont writing essays about my ancestors whose flesh and bones gave me life.  In the #52 Ancestor Challenge 2019, this week's prompt is School Days. I am encouraged to include a chapter about my bones: The Cynthia Chronicles (Life as a Perpetual Student?).

Early life lessons are best summed up as wishes. If I could start life over again, there are many things I would change.  Perhaps that is what makes people try too hard, to over-achieve, to try to get things right for the next time 'round.  I want to go back and see or feel things for the second time! I would handle my mother's illness differently.

Living with epilepsy was difficult for my mother and a challenging lesson for me.  We did not discuss her illness; it was a family secret not revealed even to my best friends.  Mother's tragedy affected dad, too.  He was very protective of her.  He often warned us, "Don't upset your mother, she could have a spell!" This notion transferred to thoughts of God. I could not upset God, either.  Imagine!  Just imagine what would happen if God had a spell!  Being a sensitive young girl, I learned to keep the secret, and to fear conflict.  Fear outweighed courage under duress.  How did I manage? What did I learn?

I survived.  I learned that I could excel as a student.  Somewhere in my DNA is a burning passion
for education.  In the mix of inheriting a zeal for school, I dearly love babies.  Is that why I had so many?  Bouncing babies while balancing an undergraduate degree, two masters degrees, two doctorates, and numerous certifications was a challenge.  My DNA is hard-wired to take a course and cuddle babies.  Thank God for functional DNA and school.

School is a life-long process.  If I have learned anything, it is this: as I matured, I tried to find who I wanted to be. In suffering, I found out who I am; transformation happens. I ponder my past, and the people I lost, which reminds me that all too soon, I will be someone's ancestor, someone's lost bones. I know the grief of losing parents as a young adult; I long for ten minutes with my mother, to kiss her soft cheeks, to be a comfort to her; I want to tell my dad he was the best. I know the angst of watching a son die and standing this side of the sod with a mother's broken heart for a son-in-law. While I cannot bring them back, I can share their warm memories for future generations.

Life Events Interspersed with School Days

Stan Forde and I married young; he was the son of Selmer Forde and Rose Bergo in Worth County, Iowa.  At the time of our marriage, he was a foreman for Hobe Engineering.  Promotions followed quickly because he was extremely bright, competent and hard-working.  Working on highway construction meant we often moved.   I  always found 'home' in the Lutheran Church as a Sunday School teacher and community as a Senior Girl Scout Leader.

1964 - We purchased a 105-acre farm two miles south of Elk Horn, Iowa.  By this year, the marriage produced four children: Roxanne, Julie, Scott, and Jon.  Stan Forde was part-owner and vice-president of Hobe Engineering.   I  taught high school Sunday School, and I served in leadership roles of the American Lutheran Church Women.  My passion for art increased; I earned a scholarship in art and began to study, also earning certification in an interior design correspondence course.   I had goals!

Scott, Cynthia, Jon, Julie,  Roxanne, and Stan
1966 – Rose, and Sam Forde moved to a mobile home on our farm.  They created a perfect nest to love grandchildren.  Sam handled the farm chores; Rose helped with gardening, raising chickens and milking a cow.  I loved my in-laws and the rich heritage they brought to our lives.  They helped with the children while I drove to classes and studied!

Rose and Selmer Forde, 3 May 1930
1969 – Our son, Paul, was born in January.  Stan Forde organized Elk Horn Construction Company.  I created the Elk Horn-Kimballton Arts and Recreation Council to celebrate art activities in the community;  I formed the Hans Christian Anderson Community Theater, and summers I was a Red Cross Water Safety instructor at the local swimming pool.

Cynthia 1969
1976-  Enrollment followed at Dana College, Blair, Nebraska, majoring in Speech Communications and Fine Arts while earning an Associate of Fine Arts Degree from  Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

1977 – My father, Ervin Gelnor Vold (Ole/Paul) passed away after ten months of suffering from lung cancer.  I began to understand Call to ministry.

1978 – Stan Forde sold Elk Horn Construction Company, and focused on organizing Forde Construction in Texas.  I was in school in Iowa.

1980 – I was crowned Mrs. Iowa America while taking classes at three different colleges; Julie married James Balfour Diaz.  Julie and Jim moved to Texas in December of 1980.  They became the parents of two children.

Mrs. Iowa America 1980
1981 – Jon, Paul, and I moved to Texas.  I  enrolled in the Fine Arts program at the University of Houston.  I quickly learned that I would not be a famous painter, nor would I make a livelihood as an artist.  I transferred an overfilled backpack of semester hour credits to the University of New York where I was awarded a Bachelor's Degree.

1984 – In February, my mother Rose Miller Vold died in California as the result of an epileptic seizure.  We purchased a home on Sandalfoot in Hearthstone, Texas.  Roxanne married Ali.  They later became the parents of three children.

1985 – I organized the first Lutheran Cursillo  (Via De Cristo) in Texas while being enrolled in the Public Relations MA degree program at the University of Houston.  I left that school to become a seminary junkie.  I studied at Perkins Seminary in Dallas, Texas earning certification as a spiritual director.  And I enrolled in classes for ordination in the Lutheran Church.  Jon married Jill; they had two daughters; Scott Forde married Karen, and they had two children.

1992 - And the family continually grew: Paul married Cheryl; they have two daughters.
1998 - Scott died from Leukemia, and our family suffered.

And that pretty wells sums up the thoughts and emotions the topic "School Days" brought to my mind.
I am one of the lucky ones whose School Days have continued life long.  This knowledge tells me to celebrate the past, rejoice in what is yet to come, knowing now is the best time to be!

A Brief Compendium on Transformation That Matters

The Rev. Dr. Cynthia Forde
2014 - Lutheran Seminary of the Southwest

Transformational ministry seeks answers to the question: “How do pastors facilitate spiritual growth?”  How do pastors encourage a fundamental change of direction leading to the spiritual growth the apostle Paul speaks of in I Corinthians 15:45-49? “After” a diverse and rewarding career in the ministry, The Rev. Dr. Cynthia Forde reflects that a gratifying life consists of a series of transformations—some that we seek and others which are thrust upon us.
Pastor Forde, the 2014 Distinguished Alumna of the Lutheran Seminary Program in the Southwest, is deeply grateful to Wartburg Seminary and Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago for jointly sponsoring the Lutheran Seminary Program in Austin, Texas and thereby making seminary education a transforming reality in the Southwest.
Rev. Forde’s seminal experience at LSPS, prior to an internship at Grace Lutheran Church in Houston, was the course in Church Administration taught by Dr. August Wenzel, former president of the Southern District of the predecessor American Lutheran Church.  “Augie Wenzel's encouragement and witticisms will stay with me forever, along with many Wenzel words of wisdom,” she avers.  Church Administration class was a foundational preparation for the innovative exploration of transformational ministry during her internship under the supervision, encouragement, and guidance of the Rev. Cliff Ackerman.
Forde’s fascination with transformation began during her undergraduate fine arts work under the tutelage of The Rev. Dr. William Thompson at Dana College in Blair, Nebraska.  The professor pushed creativity beyond imagination by using content drawn from the Psalms, the Visions of Black Elk, or garden weeds propagating new life. Through the process of reflection and prayer, after moving to Texas in 1981 and abandoning thoughts of a career in art, The Rev. Forde experienced the call to explore spiritual transformation through pastoral ministry.
Dr. Hilmer C. Krause at the Seminary of the Southwest in Austin was quite amused when she inquired about enrollment, replying, “Are you bilingual?” Rev. Forde answered, "Kan du snukke Norske?"  He said that was funny, but speaking Norwegian was of little use in Texas; he suggested that she contact Jim Fish, Director of Admissions at Wartburg Theological Seminary, Dubuque, a fruitful suggestion; Jim provided help choosing coursework that would be accepted for transfer when it was time to do a year’s residency in Iowa.
Following Jim Fish’s suggestions and one from her pastor, the Rev. Eugene Fogt, she enrolled in a 12-month certification program in spiritual formation at Perkins Seminary in Dallas.
Rev. Forde’s education continued with additional coursework at St. Mary's Theological Seminary, Austin Presbyterian Seminary, the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest, and extensive independent study with Dr. Donald Little, who supervised two years of Greek and a tour of the Holy Land.   She earned her Master of Theology degree in the History of Christian Spirituality from the Houston Graduate School of Theology before embarking upon life-changing studies in prayer from the Oblatesat LebhShomea School of Prayer in Sarita, Texas, a two-year certification program, working under the guidance of the Rev. Dr. Kelly Nemeck, O.M.I.
During those years of study, while serving on a committee of the Lutheran Association of Southwestern Camping for the purpose of spiritual renewal, Pastor Forde organized the first Texas Lutheran Cursillo/Via de Cristo 28 years ago, in January of 1986.  Via de Cristo is a proven tool for spiritual formation and leadership development. She and hundreds of Texans will be forever grateful to some of Iowa’s finest theologians, especially the Rev. Allen Hermeier, organizer of the first Lutheran Cursillo, who raised funds to bring two teams of 30 Iowans, including Pastor Jeff Alvestad’s parents, to work with Texas Episcopalians, Cursillo, and Texas Methodists from the Walk to Emmaus. Fellow parishioners at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Houston asked incredulously, "You're having a what at LutherHill in January?"  Via de Cristo changed Luther Hill by bringing to the site many adults, who donated time and money to create the Luther Hill we value highly today.
In the fall of 1988, the newly created the Lutheran Seminary Program of the Southwest opened its doors to award a full Master of Divinity degree, and Rev. Forde enrolled, her “backpack” overflowing with credit hours.  Lutheran School of Theology and Wartburg in Dubuque, Iowa awarded her a Master of Divinity degree in December of 1990, which was presented at LSPS in the spring of 1991.  Forde received and turned back a Letter of Call from Deanville, Texas before accepting a Letter of Call from King of Glory Lutheran Church in Southeast Houston which preceded her ordination at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in August of 1991. She maintains great gratitude to that congregation and to Pastor Fogt for his ongoing spiritual guidance.
King of Glory was a joyful place to begin parish ministry, despite its heavy burden of debt to the ELCA Mission Investment Fund. The congregation had been unable to make mortgage payments and faced imminent foreclosure.  Borrowing Augie Wenzel's amusing story of how he convinced Holy Cross Lutheran Church (Houston) members to pay for their new fellowship hall, the ELCA mortgage committee heard the same three choices from Pastor Forde: 1. The building could be sold. 2. The building could be torn down and the bricks sold.  3. The Mission Investment Fund could grant the congregation a year of grace.  They bit the bullet and granted the year of grace! King of Glory congregation had a reprieve, a year to grow and make mortgage payments.
King of Glory boasted only two strong leaders, and after ten leadership and outreach training events during that year of grace, they still boasted only two leaders.  Programs are not transformative, although the congregation did grow.  The congregation was able to make partial payments and to sponsor an intern, Sylvia Gatzke, who became the next pastor four years later.   After Pastor Forde left, KOG was able to survive for only a few years until, sadly, Pastor Gatzke passed away, the neighborhood changed, and a new, large Lutheran Church Missouri Synod congregation formed down the street.  Following these setbacks, the congregation voted to merge with New Life Lutheran Church in Pearland, Texas.
Pastor Forde’s deeper call to spiritual direction shaped the creation of Hosea’s House, a Sabbath House for Clergy, on her Hempstead ranch. During the process of establishing Hosea House, Trinity Lutheran Church in Hempstead extended a Letter of Call that she accepted.  For the mostly silver-haired neighborhood congregation with no debt, the face of ministry changed to grief support groups for the congregation and the community.  Trinity Lutheran elders taught Pastor Forde the positive side of suffering, the transformation that God can make in the years of decline.  Rev. Forde experienced role reversal after a crippling horseback riding accident, as the congregation ministered to her during her recovery from the accident followed soon after by the death of her oldest son from leukemia.  A devastated and heart-broken Cynthia became an unwilling member of “Parents who Follow Caskets” and suffered the ensuing despair so often destructive to family life. Pastor Forde resigned from the congregation to work through her personal grief.  A year later, she returned, serving as pulpit supply and interim ministry for various congregations: St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Shelby and St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waller.
Throughout ministry Pastor Forde pursued additional studies, earning a Doctor of Ministry from the Graduate Theological Foundation in Spiritual Direction and a Ph.D. degree (abd) in Ecumenism that included studies at Christ Church College in Oxford, England.  She participated in the formation of the SE Texas Association of Spiritual Directors, serving as chair of the by-laws committee, and coordinated an effort for the Gulf Coast Synod to participate with the Episcopal Diocese of Texas’ Formation in Direction (F.I.N.D.).  In addition to being a spiritual director, she teaches, writes and leads workshops on the topic of spiritual direction.
Pastor Forde became a leader for workshops and retreats, focusing on spiritual life and prayer, including such topics as the Meyer-Briggs Typology, “The Pastor as Spiritual Director” at the Jung Center in Houston, “Living with Questions” through the Jung Center in San Francisco, and “The History of Christian Art,” “The History of Christian Spirituality,” and “Spiritual Direction” at the Melanchthon Institute in Houston.
Her involvement at a Synodical level included serving on numerous committees, being a representative to the church-wide assembly in 1992, participating in the formation of the Mission Endowment Fund, and serving as a resource to First Call pastors for three years.
Bishop Paul Blom appointed Pastor Forde as Women’s Advocate representative from the Gulf Coast Synod to the ELCA.  She organized the Gulf Coast Synod Women's Advocacy Program with the mission to mentor disadvantaged women towards education. Besides mentoring women, the organization raised funds to assist with college education for many women.
Now fully retired, having completed maturity and re-entering adolescence, she experiences the transformation of another sort: reveling in God’s creation through hiking in the mountains and witnessing daily a continuing kaleidoscope of change from atop a motorcycle.   Needless to say, her spiritual development continues apace, thank God.
How DOES spiritual transformation happen?” In the classic children’s story, “The Velveteen Rabbit,” the Skin Horse explained to the Rabbit how to become real—when a child loves you for a long, long time.  As a pastor and spiritual director, she sees her role as that of a Skin Horse.  Someone (God) happens to us.

PETER AND ANNA WAGNER’S STORY IN AMERICA
The Rev. Dr. Cynthia Forde

This is a long story with many chapters. I grew up knowing about my great grandmother Anna Schulz King of Northwood, Worth County, Iowa.  Anna died when I was two years old.  This is the story of Anna Schulz’s mother’s family in America.  Barbara Wagner, daughter of Peter E. Wagner and Anna Catherine Karges.  It is the compilation of years of work researching the Wagners that reached fruition in Osage, Mitchell County, Iowa in 2013.

By 1870, the family resided in Springfield, Dane County, Wisconsin, and includes the older three daughters who were out of the house by 1880.  The two youngest children, Joe and Annie, had not yet been born. The family could not be located in the 1860 census of Wisconsin, even though the birthplaces of the children indicate that they did indeed live in that state as early as 1854. Peter could not be found in the 1850 census.  Both Peter and Anna apparently died after the Iowa State Census of 1805 and before 1900, as a search of that census did not locate either one of them.

Research Notes:

The death registers of Mitchell County cover the years from 1880 to 1931, and were searched for Peter and Anna Catherine. Neither of them were found listed in these records.  A collection of Catholic cemetery records of the county confirmed the Wagner name, but no mention of Peter, Anna, or any of their children.  Two county histories available at the Family History Library were searched for information on the Wagner family, but nothing helpful could be found.

Naturalization records of Dane County, Wisconsin were searched for an entry for Peter Wagner. Peter's declaration of intention to become a citizen took place in Dane County on October 22, 1855.  Nearly twenty-two years later, on April 9th, 1877, he became a citizen of the United States.  Fritz Wessel and Andrew Wald made oath for him and vouched that he had been a resident of the United States for at least five years, and a resident of Wisconsin for at Least one year, and vouched for his good character (Naturalization Petitions and Oaths, Dane WI, 1861-1897, FHL, Film # 1293592).    The naturalization papers do not mention a specific place of origin for Peter.

Peter and Anna Catherine married in Germany before they immigrated to America.  A search of the marriage records of Dane County, Wisconsin confirmed that they did not marry there.  The IGI shows  the marriage records in Prussia.

A multi-volumed set of transcribed immigration records from the 1840's through the 1880's pulls together records of German immigrants.  The volumes of this set, known as Germans to America, were searched in the appropriate time period, the early 1850's.  There were several Peter Wagners who arrived during those years and they are noted in the research calendar. In 1852, a thirty-one year old Peter Wagner arrived with a twenty-six year old Cathrina on the ship Hungarian out of Havre.

Attention turned to tracing the children of Peter and Anna Catherina forward in the census to learn more about them and to obtain a death certificate for one or more of them.  A death certificate should list the mother's maiden name and might even give specific places of birth for the parents.  "Nick" Wagner, born in 1868 resided in Rock Township of Mitchell County, Iowa in 1900.  The 1900 census shows Nicolas in Osage Township again with his wife Lillian and two daughters Jessie and Ellen. The 1910 census shows Nicolas still living in Rock Township with his wife Lillian and two children but this time Jessie is listed as a son and his daughter Ellen.  Still alive in 1930, sixty year old Nick Wagner consistently reported that his parents were natives of Germany.  A death certificate for Nick Wagner should be on file in Iowa sometime after 1930. Unfortunately death certificates for Iowa are not available to the Family History Library online or even in an index.  These must be requested through family members of the deceased.

Another child of Peter and Anna's is Joseph Wagner.  A young man by that name resided in Cedar Township of Mitchell County in 1900, as a servant in the home of Albert and Lucy Kildee.  Joseph shows a birth date of October 1876.   His birth took place in Wisconsin and his parents were both born in Germany, which fits the family profile.  Joseph could not be found in 1910 in Iowa.  A possible match appears in Grant County, Washington in 1910 age thirty-three, born in Wisconsin, parents born in Germany.  The same person again resided in Low Gap Precinct in 1920, still single, age forty-one and born in Wisconsin, parents born in Germany.  This may or may not be the same Joseph Wagner from Mitchell County, Iowa.  He was again located in the same place in the 1930 census and still single with no family.  An online index to death records of the State of Washington does not appear to contain a matching record for this Joseph Wagner.  It is unlikely that his death certificate would contain his parent's names since he had no family.  Whoever provided information for his death certificate would probably have no knowledge of his parents, so further efforts to locate a death certificate for Joseph were abandoned.

Michael Wagner, fourth son of Peter and Anna, resided in Jenkins Township of Mitchell County in 1900, born in August of 1866 in Wisconsin, parents born in Germany. He had a wife named Anna and daughters Margaret and Stella.  Ten years later this family could not be found, but in 1920 they lived in Springfield, Missouri, in Greene County.  "Mike" Wagner was fifty-two years old, born in Wisconsin, parents born in Germany.  He could not be located in 1930.  An online database of Missouri death certificates contained an index reference for a Michael Wagner who died in Green County in 1947.  The actual certificates could not be accessed because of technical difficulties with the website, so the search was postponed to a later time.

John Wagner, sixth child and third son of Peter and Anna Wagner, lived in Osage Township, Mitchell County in 1900, still single.  His birth took place in August 1863 in Wisconsin, his parents born in Germany. He had a housekeeper named Mary Packard, and his younger sister Anna Wagner lived with him.  Anna was born in December of 1875, also in Wisconsin.  By 1910 John had a wife named Mary, perhaps the Mary Packard who kept house for him in 1900.  They had been married for seven years but had no children. John could not be found in 1920 or 1930, and may have moved out of the area.  His common name makes locating him somewhere else in the country a tedious and time-consuming search.

Second oldest son Peter could not be found in 1900 or any of the later censuses. Frank, the oldest son, resided in Douglas Township, Mitchell County, born in May 1861 in Wisconsin, parents born in Germany.  He had a wife named Mary and three children.  The 1910 census shows this family still in Douglas Township, frank with an age of fifty-one with six children.  He could not be found in Iowa in 1920 0r 1930.  Information provided for research shows that he is believed to have moved to Minnesota, where he died on April 10, 1924.    An online index to Minnesota death records lists three Frank Wagners dying there in 1924.  One of them died on April 10 of that year in Mower County.  The Minnesota death certificates are available on microfilm at the Family History Library, so this reference was followed to the corresponding certificate.  Strangely this Frank Wagner was not a match.  The other two certificates for Frank Wagner's who died in 1924 were also viewed and were not the children of Peter and Anna.

The death records of Mitchell County were revisited in order to Search for the children of Peter and Anna.  Unfortunately none of them could be identified there.  Marriage records of the county were searched for the children and several were found: Francis/Frank Wagner married Mary Elizabeth Johans on October 10, 1882, at New Haven. Frank's parents names are given as Peter Wagner and Anna Carins or Curins.  This was an exciting find, the first indication of her maiden name so far.

Nicholas J. Wagner married Lillian May Jeffries on November 27, 1894 in Osage.  His parents were listed as Peter and Mary Wagner which is peculiar.  Nicholas is listed as twenty-eight and born in Wisconsin.

Michael Wagner and Anna Piut were wed on May 10 1895 in Sacred Heart Church in Osage. Michaels' parents are listed as Peter and Anna Wagner, no maiden name listed.  The mention of Sacred Heart Church is a valuable clue as to where to search for more information.  the Family History Library does not have the records of this church, but searches could be requested by correspondence.  Perhaps the church marriage records will provide more detailed information.  A call was made to the church secretary and the information forwarded to her in an email.  They had no information at all.

A very interesting marriage record shows sixty-five year old Peter Wagner of Osage, native of Germany, marrying on June 15, 1896 to Henriette Ludtke, also age sixty-five.  Peter's parents are listed as Jacob Wagner and Katherena Ziax or Zeier.   Peter married a second time after the death of Anna and did not want it known that he was over seventy years old.  How many elderly men named Peter Wagner, born in Germany, could have resided in Osage at that particular time?  The 1896 date corresponds with Anna's presumed death. The 1900 census was searched for Peter and Henriette, but they could not be found.  This may turn out to be a very key find.

The last marriage located for the children of Peter and Anna in Mitchell County was for John Wagner, who did indeed marry Mary or Marie Packard, formerly Marie Tubs by birth. Their marriage took place on December 18, 1902.  John was thirty-eight and born in Madison, Wisconsin.  His parents were listed as Peter Wagner and "don't know." This was disappointing, as corroboration of the names shown for the mother of the groom in Frank's marriage record would have been very helpful.  No marriage record could be found for Susan or Anna, the two youngest daughters of Peter.

The actual marriage certificates that correspond with the he above register entries were also searched, to see if more information would be given.  The marriage certificates actually contained less information, not even having a space for parent's names.  The marriage certificate of Peter Wagner to Henriette Ludtke was copied and included as an example.

Each of these Wagners were searched in the 1925 State Census of Iowa, since this census asked for the names of parents.  Nick Wagner, age fifty-six, resided in Osage Township with his wife Lillian and two children in 1925.  Strangely, he gave the names of his parents ad Peter Wagner and Mary Jurgeson.  This corresponds with his marriage record which gave the name of his mother as Mary.  It is possible that this Nick is not the same as the son of Peter and Anna, although his age matches fairly well and his father's name was Peter.  No other Nicholas or Nick about that same age could be found in the censuses or other records of Mitchell County.

John Wagner, age fifty-four or fifty-six, lived in Cedar Township.  His wife's name then was Agnes C.,, rather than that Mary or Mare. His parents were listed as Peter Wagner and "not able to answer."  This was not helpful.  Other children of Anna and Peter could not be identified in the 1925 Iowa State Census.

The Missouri Death Certificates online were finally accessible and Michael Wagner of Greene County appears to be a match.  His birth year is off by two years from what is in the 1900 census, and his birthplace was recorded as Stacyville, Iowa instead of Wisconsin. Stacyville is in Mitchell County, Iowa. Unfortunately, the spaces for the names of his parents only say "unknown."  The information was Mrs. Alice Jones, no relationship stated. Michael's wife Anna had predeceased him, as Michael was designated as widowed on the death certificate. Hopefully the Iowa death certificates of other children will give more helpful information.

Information provided for research included a transcription of the obituary of John Wagner, sixth child and third son of Peter and Anna.  John died on August 6, 1931.  Some helpful information is included, particularly concerning each of his surviving siblings and their places of residence.  One of these is Mrs. Katherine Kluff of Chicago.

The 1930 census did not reveal any Katherine or Catherine Kluff in Cook County.  In 1920, 1920 and 1900, a Katherine or Kate Klopp lived in Chicago and seemed a good match.  She reported in each of these three censuses that her birth occurred in Wisconsin and that her parents were born in Germany.  The 1900 census shows her birth month and year as May 1860. This is consistent with Catherine, the daughter of Peter and Anna, age ten in 1870.

The Family History Library is fortunate to have the death certificates of Illinois on microfilm in this time period.  An online index pinpointed her date of death and certificate number, which facilitated locating the correct certificate.  She was indeed the daughter of Peter Wagner and Anna, maiden name Karst. Her parent’s places of birth are listed as Luxembourg, a new twist to research.  Katherine's birth took place in Madison, Wisconsin on 11 May 1860. She rests in St. Joseph Cemetery in River Grove, Illinois.  She died shortly after her brother John.

Another tidbit revealed in the obituary of John Wagner is that his brother Frank of Waseca, Minnesota attended the funeral.  Apparently  Frank died after 9131.   Frank and Peter both attended the funeral so their deaths should be searched in the he years after 1931.  Neither could be found in the later censuses and must have been missed.

Frank Wagner died 6 October 1931 less than two months after his brother John; the death certificate tells us that he was born 3 May 1858 in Wisconsin to Peter Wagner and Anna Schmidt both born in Germany.  The Schmidt maiden name is very different from the name given on Frank's own marriage record which appears to be Carins.  Evidently, the informant was unaware of Frank’s mother’s maiden name.

Peter Wagner died in Waseca, Waseca County, Minnesota on March 29, 1937, about seventy-six years old.  No date or place of birth was known by the informant, Jack Weller. The names of the parents were unknown.  Both Frank and Peter rest in Catholic Cemetery in Waseca.

John's obituary mentions that he married late in life to Agnes Banker. This prompted a search of Mitchell County marriage records around 1920 which might give more specific information about parents than earlier marriage records.  John's marriage to Agnes Prell Banker took place on 27 November 1919 in Osage.  His birthplace is listed as Dane County, Wisconsin and parents names as Peter Wagner and Annie Roumer.  This is yet another very different maiden name for Peter's wife.

The death certificate of Barbara Wagner Schulz finally arrived from the State of Iowa after many months of waiting.  This record gives the mother's maiden name as Anna "Cargas" born in Germany. This is somewhat similar to Carins and Karst, but not exactly confirmation.

Several distinct spellings and version of Anna's maiden name have now surfaced.  German names would logically begin with a K rather than a C, but anything is possible.

Relatives of Anna Catherine Kargas Wagner might be found in Dane County, Wisconsin, the first known place of residence for the couple.  The 1860 and 1870 censuses of that area were searched for these surnames as well as variant spellings.  Nothing remotely close could be found in 1860, but some possibilities were noted in 1870.  In Springfield, the same town in which Peter and Anna resided in 1870,  there resided the family of John "Karis" age forty-three and born in Prussia.  This name is close to Karins noted in the marriage record of Frank Wagner, son of Peter and Anna.

Also in Springfield was noted John P. Kartes, age thirty-three and born in Prussia with his wife Margaret and their children.  Their household included Philip and Catherine Kartes, both sixty-three and born in Prussia.  It is interesting to note that next door to the Kartes family lived Christian Schmitz, age sixty-eight and born in Prussia with his wife Margaretha, age sixty.  The above households lived in the area of Ashton Post Office, while the ancestral Wagner family lived closer to the Dane Post Office.  It would have been exciting to find such a surname living very close to Peter and Anna. No Roumer families were found in the area in 1860 and 1870  but several Reimer and Reiner households were listed and showed German origins.

In Berry Township of Dane County, the 1870 census shows John "Kirst" age fifty-three, born in Prussia.  He and his wife Marie had eight children in their home, the oldest three born in Prussia and the rest born in Wisconsin.  The ages of these children suggest a migration around 1855, perhaps close to the time that Peter and Anna came to America.

No Karst spellings were found in Dane County.  No Karins, Kargas or any of the other names beginning with a C or K or soundex variants.  A John Karst resided in blue Earth County, MN in 1870, age sixty three born in Prussia. Blue Earth County sits next to Waseca County where Frank and Peter settled.

Moving forward to the 1880 census, a John Karst was located in Wayne Township in Mitchell County, Iowa. His age of forty-four and birthplace of Prussia is intriguing, as he could have been a brother to Anna.

Peter E. Wagner married only twice as he signed this on his second marriage to Henrietta Luedtke in 1896.   Anna Catherina nee Kargas is the mother of all of his children.  All of those children had to sign a release in Anna's probate proceedings, which provides a list of proven children.  I have her will, her death and burial date and location.  I have Peter's land acquisitions in Mitchell County and land locations.

Research Notes by Larry Shoger

6 Sept 2012 - Osage, Mitchell County, Iowa,

Indeed... Peter Wagner who married Henrietta Luedtke in a second marriage, was the Peter Wagner who was my second great grandfather. One year after the marriage Henrietta filed a suit against Peter for support.  She ended up with the property in 1901.  I have cc of those records plus his purchase of a house / lot across town in 1905.  I cannot find a death or probate record here or the disposition of that house, but I believe he gave it to Nicholas who married Ms. Jeffries.  I believe Peter moved to Waseca, MN and died near sons Peter Jr. and Frank.  I cannot get death records for MN before 1908 online.

Looking at John W. Wagner's obit more closely:

- John W. died in 1931.

- Surviving siblings: Frank and Peter (both living in Waseca, MN); Nick (living in Osage, IA), Mike (living in Springfield, MO); Annie and Katherine (Mrs. Kluff) living in Chicago, IL; and Joe (whereabouts unknown).

Now we know:

- Nick Wagner died in 1948
- Mike Wagner was living in Springfield in 1920
- Annie Wagner was living in Chicago in 1930
- Mike Wagner and family not found in 1930 census (ancestry.com search engine)
- Frank Wagner and family not found in 1930 census (ancestry.com search engine)
- Katherine Kluff not found in any census (1900-1930) (ancestry.com search engine)

The 1862 Dane County Plat Map shows Chs. Schulz owning land in Sec. 5 & 8, in Springfield Twp. and the 1873 C. Schulz owns the same land.  The Wagners owned a large dairy farm nearby.

St. John’s Lutheran Church has no death records for Carl Schulz, Sr.  who was deceased between 1880 and June 7, 1882.  They must have been recorded in some other church. I have copies of the St. John's Lutheran Church that was in the Springfield area. The 6th death recorded is Carl’s wife, Emilie Schulz, geb. Rieck, b. Jan 20, 1832, d. December 13, 1855. The Golz's are listed in the records.

The first log church and cemetery was in Springfield Twp.  The second one, a small stone church and cemetery, was in Dane Township where the cemetery still is.  The first cemetery is overgrown with no remaining markers.  This is where Emilie would be buried.  The third church, a wood frame church was built in Roxbury Township, but the church is no longer there.  At the closing of the church they merged with St. John's Berry and St. Paul's Marxville.  The records are located at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 8748 Hwy 19, Mazomanie, Wisconsin 53560 Parish Phone 608-767-2274 Pastor Jerry Schara.

Schulz Research Notes from Cynthia Forde

The 1925 Iowa State Census included the names of the parents for the first time.   Barbara's parents stated their parents were born in Germany, married in Germany and emigrated to the US.  They resided in Dane County, Wisconsin where Barbara was born and later married to Carl Schulz, Jr. son of Carl Schulz, Sr. and his wife, Elmira (sic) or Emelia nee Rieck.

ANNA SCHULZ STORY

Anna Schulz King Painter

Anna Schulz was born 28 February 1877 to Carl and Barbara (Wagner) Schulz, Jr. in Waunakee, Dane County, Wisconsin.   She was one of eight children born to the Schulz family.  All four of Anna's grandparents emigrated to America from Prussia [now Germany].  Anna's parents were born and married in Wisconsin, moving to Worth County, Iowa not long after her birth.  The Schulz family farmed south of Northwood near the Shell Rock River.  The Carl Schulz family was Lutheran.

Anna's birthdate was February 28, 1877, according to her marriage license application and census data.  Yet, the death date in her obituary and on her gravestone is five years younger.

Anna Schulz married on 28 December 1896 to Harry Bernard King in the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.   The young couple obtained their marriage license in Charles City, Floyd County, Iowa.

OBITUARY ANNA SCHULZ KING PAINTER

Residents of Northwood and vicinity were shocked and grieved last Saturday morning at the news of the death of Mrs. J. L. Painter.  The news arrived from Mason City where she had undergone a serious operation at St. Joseph's Hospital Wednesday of last week.  Complications of unexpected nature caused death at 5:l5 A.M. Saturday morning.  Two of Mrs. Painter's daughters, Misses Rose and Rena King, had come from Des Moines Wednesday. She developed complications on Friday and did not survive. Mr. Painter and Miss Rena King were at her bedside.  Miss Ruth King, daughter of Mrs. Painter, employed in Los Angeles, California., left that city by plane Friday for Des Moines where Miss Rena King was to meet her to bring to Northwood.  Owing to bad weather, the plane was grounded at Omaha Saturday morning making it necessary for Miss Ruth King to go from Omaha to Des Moines by train. The two daughters reached Northwood Saturday evening. The visitation was on Tuesday at l:30 P.M. at the Sorenson Funeral Home and the service followed at 2 P.M. at Northwood Methodist Church by Rev. R. S. Phillips.  She was born, Anna Schulz, the daughter of Carl and Barbara Schulz on February 28, l882 Waunakee, Wisconson and died April l9, l94l in the hospital in Mason City at the age 59 years, l month, 22 days.  She lived in the Northwood vicinity the greater part of life.  Survivors include her husband, J. L. Painter, whom she married l932. Three daughters, Rose and Rena King of Des Moines, Ruth King of Los Angeles, California.

She is survived by three grandchildren, Mrs. Irving Vold, Betty, and JoAnn Miller all of Northwood and one great-granddaughter, Cynthia Vold, of Northwood. One daughter, Ruby King Miller, preceded her in death.  Her four daughters are children of her first marriage to Harry B. King who died l9l9.  Mrs. Painter has four sisters and one brother living. (Northwood Anchor, Northwood, Iowa, April 24, l94l)

Anna is buried next to Harry Bernard King at the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood; an I.O.O.F. grave marker designates Anna’s membership in the Oddfellows Lodge, an organization that assists widows and orphans.

[*In 1919, Anna King continued to operate the confectionary and cigar store located in the current Ensign Law Office on West Main Street in Northwood.  In 1921 she closed the restaurant and went to work as the cook for the Northwood hotel.  In 1928, she married Jerome L. Painter of Northwood and moved to his farm home. The King daughters were not fond of their stepfather.  In 1932, the oldest King sister, Ruby Anna Miller, died in Ennis, Texas. Anna stayed with the grieving family in Ennis for a few months; a year later, Rena and Rose drove to Arkansas and brought the three Miller daughters to Northwood to live with Anna. ]

MEMORIES OF MY GRANDMOTHER, ANNA SCHULZ KING PAINTER, MOTHER OF RUBY ANNA KING MILLER

I am Betty Jean Francis (Miller), the third child of Ruby Anna King Miller and Coy Clifton Miller.  I was born in Ennis, Texas, in 1923.

My first memories of Gramma were of the Painter farm in Riceville, Iowa.  My two sisters and I visited in the summer.  I believe we visited before my mother’s death.  I witnessed my first and only cyclone while there visiting. Chicken coops were flying in the air. We stayed in the basement.  No buildings were damaged, just chicken pens.

The farm was wonderful.  We did not have electricity until the Tennessee Valley Authority was built by President Roosevelt’s order.  This was also true with my Daddy’s relatives in Arkansas.  Everyone used coal oil lamps.

The farm consisted of a living room (called a Parlor), which was kept closed except in case we had visitors.  A LARGE kitchen.  When sisters and I were there we had a bath on Saturday nights.  A huge tub was brought into the kitchen near the woodstove.  We all three used the bathwater.  Ha.  It was then dragged to the back door and emptied. In this magnificent kitchen, my Gramma Anna baked awesome baked goods and food for dinner.  She did not use measuring cups that I can remember.  She just grabbed flour, etc., with her hands and knew how much to add to the recipe.

We were visiting at the farm when harvesting took place.  Hired hands were there to help with the harvesting.  Anna set up a long table (with a table cloth) and the table was laden with huge amounts of mashed potatoes, gravy, meat, vegetables, coleslaw (her coleslaw dressing was also great).  There were also pies for dessert.

In the basement of the farmhouse, my grandparents made homebrew (beer).  Sometimes in the middle of the night, one could hear a bottle exploding.  It was a very good beer.  Anna did not know that we would taste the beer in a glass that someone did not finish.

The house had an upstairs (bedrooms) with three bedrooms..  One of the bedrooms was the guest bedroom.  Anna or my step-grandfather set up a pulley (in the guest bedroom) attached to the ceiling and a quilt frame was attached.  When Anna wanted to work on a quilt it could be lowered down to chair positions.  She had friends who came over to help work on her quilts.  I wonder where these quilts are now.  Maybe they just wore out.

My step-grandfather Painter took us girls to the gathered hay on a wagon led by four horses.  He would spear the hay into the wagon and we would stomp on it to allow more hay to be brought in.  That was lots of fun.  We rode the horses (with their harnesses) back to the farm.

When my mother passed away she and Painter came to Ennis to live with us.  This did not work out.  My Daddy and my step-grandfather did not “get along,” I do not know why.  The Painters returned to Iowa and we moved to Arkansas to live with daddy’s sister, Retha Looney for a year.   Rose and Rena came to get us in Arkansas.  My aunt Rose purchased a house on North Highway 65 and we lived there until I graduated from High School and Gramma passed away.  I loved that house.  It was home!  It also had a LARGE kitchen.  Gramma planted a garden out back and Jo and I helped her plow the garden.  She also purchased runt pigs and kept them back near the farm in the back of the house.  She fed them food scraps from our table beside the usual corn.  When it was butchering time she had to leave the premises, as these runts had become her pets..  Our back porch was fitted with tables and the pig was butchered into roasts. Pork chops, etc.  She would wrap these meat items (no butchering until frozen winter) and leave them on the tables she had set up.  She used this back porch as her freezer.

When the garden was ready to harvest, she canned the corn she had grown.  She also canned green beans.  We helped dig the potatoes and those were kept in the basement for food for winter. If winter came to an end before the meat had been consumed, she would can the meat.  She was so versatile.  She picked the dandelions from the front yard and made dandelion wine.  We also helped pick apples and wrapped them (individually) in newspaper and put them in a bushel basket. We then had apples all winter. What a wonderful treat, but hard work for her.

After living with Aunt Retha and Uncle Jim in Mena, Arkansas, Rena and Rose came to bring us back to Northwood.  I was in eighth grade when we left Northwood, Iowa for Texas to be with my father. We then came back to Northwood when my father’s business failed in El Paso, Texas.  He started a pool hall believing there would thousands of soldiers in El Paso, due to the upcoming World War II.  It was a good investment, but it was premature.   I had attended high school in El Paso.  I finished at Northwood High School and graduated there. While living in Northwood my Gramma Anna spoke German with my Aunt Minnie and Aunt Tillie over the telephone around Christmas.  I should have asked her to teach me German but didn’t think of it.  I played pinochle with her.

On prom night I was not told that my Grandmother was very seriously ill.  I knew she had surgery, but did not know she was dying.  After the prom night or it was graduation night, I came home to my sister Rose and Olie’s house and was told the devastating news.  She was like another mother to me and this was also a devastating death.  I loved her very much and as I became an adult I realized what a sacrifice she had made to raise we three girls, but it was a loving sacrifice.

I shall always remember her.  Betty Miller Francis (Memorial Day 2009)

The King Sisters: Ruby, Rose, Ruth, Rena

Ruth, Rose and Rena King ca. 1970's

The King sisters enjoyed a unique standing in the community; according to a newspaper article in the Northwood Anchor, "Heads would turn because each one of the King sisters was more beautiful than the next."   They also valued education; the King sisters graduated from Northwood High. Rose, Ruth and Rena graduated from business school in Des Moines, Iowa.   Ruby married and the others carved out interesting careers.  After many years, Rena married and raised a family in Des Moines, Iowa."

Ruby Anna King

Ruby Anna King was born 16 June 1898, to Harry Bernard King and his wife, Anna Schulz, in Orchard, Mitchell County, Iowa.  The King family moved to the K. Cleophas farm 2 miles SE of Kensett in Worth County, Iowa by 1900.  Ruby won some spelling contests as a student, according to the Worth Index Newspaper in 1912 and 1913.  She sang in Northwood High School chorus.  After high school, she became a telegraph operator and met the love of her life,  Coy Clifton Miller, a dispatcher with the Rock Island Line stationed in Albert Lea, Minnesota. Ruby married Coy Miller 25thof September 1916 in Albert Lea, Freeborn County, Minnesota.   The couple had three daughters, Rose Arlene (born 1920 in Northwood, Iowa), Betty Jean, and JoAnn.  From Ruby's daughters we know she was a happy woman with a delightful sense of humor. She died at age 33 years, 7 months and 24 days, 9 February 1932, in Ennis, Texas, from a reaction to horse serum given for the treatment of pneumonia.

Ruby was buried during the depression without a headstone.  It was not until 1994 that her two daughters, JoAnn Miller Eid and Betty Miller Francis purchased the headstone for her grave. Cynthia Vold Forde accompanied Betty and George Francis to visit the grave while they chose the headstone.
