#52 Ancestor Challenge 2019, Week 27, Independence

Daughter of the American Revolution

The Rev. Dr. Cynthia Forde

Aunt Betty Miller Francis said she wanted to be a member of the D.A. R., the Daughters of the American Revolution about 1965.  Her tremendous enthusiasm propelled me to do some serious research making aunt Betty’s dream come true thirty-five years later.  I didn’t stop with aunt Betty, but I invited aunt JoAnn Eid to become a member, too.  Now, my daughters and granddaughters are proud members as well.

My D.A.R. Patriots are Hugh Ivey, his son-in-law, Fadda Jarrett,  James Lea of Country Line Creek, his son-in-law, Capt. Joseph I. Henderson, and his son-in-law, Lawrence Bankston.  I have one more patriot, Peter Bankston, available as a patriot.  Because of the lack of solid evidence required by the D.A.R., there are at least three additional patriots that are mine.

Here is a brief summary of my patriots:

Hugh Ivey: His name appears on a Sussex County list of those taking the oath of allegiance in 1777, and was later paid for supplying 185 pounds of beef to the militia.24

Fadda Jarrett: VIRGINIA REVOLUTIONARY PUBLIC CLAIMS  IN THREE VOLUMES;  compiled and transcribed by Janice L. Abercrombie and Richard Slatten; Iberian Publishing Company, Athens, Georgia; Volume III; p. 894
" p. 8 Jarratt, Faddy 287# beef."
also listed "Jarratt, Henry 350# beef."
"p. 9 Jarratt, Nicholas 27 gal. 6 pts, brandy"
Volume III; p. 899
"p. 4 Jarratt, Faddy a saddle."

Joseph Henderson: The DAR lists Joseph as a Patriot, having performed "Patriotic Service". Georgia Revolutionary War Soldiers, Vol. II, p. 725, #114,
1. Georgia Revolutionary War Soldiers, Sailors, Patriots, and Descendants, Vol.. I, p. 106.
2.  The Roster of Revolutionary War Soldiers in Georgia, p. 255.
3. The Roster of South Carolina Patriots in the American, p. 435.
4. War of the Revolution Book A, p. 89, Nov. 1781, audited - No. 31.  Secretary of State’s Office, North Carolina; also certified on file in auditor’s office No. 1241 as follows:
“ State of North Carolina, Salisbury District, Lower Broad, Aug. 21, 1783, certifies that Joseph Henderson exhibited paid claims and was allowed 15 pounds specie, signed by John Auld, Stephen Miller, and S. L. M. Chiles.”  N. S. D. A. R. No. 196199 (Laura Towns (Miller) Martin of West Point, Mississippi, supplemental paper on Joseph Henderson.
5. The Roster of South Carolina Patriots in the American Revolution by Bobby Gilmer Moss, Limestone College Baltimore, Publishing Company, Inc., 1983., p. 435,
"Henderson, Joseph.  He served one hundred nine days from 1 June to 17 September 1780 as a horseman.  In addition, he served ninety-eight days as a wagon guard under Colonel Sumter on a trip to Newberry.  From 21 February to 8 April 1782, he served at Orangeburg and he served ninety days at Stono. In addition, he was on a tour to Briar Creek from 15 February to 1 April 1779.  He lost a blanket, saddle, and bridle at Briar Creek.  AA. 3523."
Lawrence Bankston:1774   Lawrence Bankston, Jacob, and Andrew Bankston were listed on Lince's Circle in North Carolina with Tunstall Roan, John Poteet, and Joseph Henderson. Undoubtedly, his Revolutionary War Service was in North Carolina.   Source: N.S.D.A.R.:  Vol. 51, p. 66.  Ms. Isabelle Davis Thomason, DAR ID # 50142.

"ANOTHER REV SOLDIER GONE”
" Died at his residence, in Wilkes County, on Friday, the 15th of November, after a protracted affliction, Lawrence Bankston, in the 90th year of his age.  As to the religious views of the deceased, or his prospects for the future, we can say nothing -- we commit him to that Judge who will do right.  As a  husband and a parent, he was ever kind and affectionate -- as a master, humane and indulgent.  He died, as he had lived, in the affection of all who knew him.  I. T. J."

James Lea Country Line Creek: The Lea files at D.A.R. were compromised because of genealogy confusion.  Finally, corrections are complete.  James Lea of Country Line Creek is the Patriot instead of James Lea of Kilgore’s Branch in Caswell County, North Carolina for civic service.

Eligible Patriot
Peter Bankston: was proven to be a DAR Patriot in 2008 by Judith Ann Taylor Kimball of San Francisco.  Congratulations to Judith and thanks, too, for all of the "Daughters" who can obtain membership in the NSDAR or a supplemental based on her hard work.  Her number is 718220

Eligible Patriot To Be Proven
Joseph Cobb, the father of Falby Cobb, who married James Brooks in Warren County, Georgia, was granted land in St. Paul’s Parish, now Wilkes County, Georgia.  There is no doubt about Joseph’s service, but I lack solid proof that he was the father of Falby Cobb Brooks.
